As part of the new conference structure, 10 masterclasses facilitated by international and local experts will be on offer prior to the kickoff of the AudA 2020 Conference.
Held on Sunday 3 May, a diverse range of masterclasses will dive deep into a specific topic area relevant to the needs of today’s audiologists. You will leave with a thorough understanding of the competencies covered and how they can be applied in your work context. Our first ever mini hack will also take place on the Sunday.

Details
Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that is characterised by difficulties in social interaction, communication, restricted and repetitive interests and behaviours, and sensory sensitivities.
Since both hearing loss and autism have an impact upon communication, the audiologist plays a vital role in ensuring children who experience communication difficulties are provided with the most appropriate intervention.
Audiological management of children who are on the autism spectrum is further complicated since the displayed characteristics affect behavioural hearing assessment, interaction with the child client and the management and use of hearing technologies.
This masterclass entails a multi-disciplinary perspective on the management of children who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. It will draw upon expertise from audiology, early intervention and paediatrics, combined with lived experience of families.
The format comprises a blend of presentations, case studies and panel discussions, during which participants will have the opportunity to both share their own experiences and learn from the experiences of the presenters, colleagues and parents.

This masterclass will explore every element of the connected hearing care journey: from prevention, through amplification modifications with remote software applications; to basic trouble shooting like wax management or device insertion; and ongoing rehabilitation services to improve communication. It will address key questions about enhancing your practice using the myriad of connected healthcare methods in a cost-effective and commercially-viable way.
It will provide an opportunity for participants to have a hands-on experience of remote fitting and fine-tuning applications across a range of different software packages provided by a range of manufacturers. It will also address the basics of scheduling and appointments; moving through to setting up NOAH files and record keeping systems; onto fitting, fine-tuning and verification of devices with a remote care service package; and finally review this application for HSP claiming.

While less than 15% of Audiology practices in Australia are run privately/independently, running your own private practice in audiology can be personally, professionally, and financially rewarding. It gives you complete control of all aspects of your career, business and personal goals. While private practice can offer a very satisfying career path, there is much work that needs to be completed before the signs are hung and doors are opened (if your service will even have doors in the future?). Success in private practice takes planning as well as implementation of the plan.
Through a guided hands-on exercise, you will have the opportunity to understand different business models and determine the best fit for your circumstance. You will have the opportunity to develop a business plan with support and guidance from successful business owners. You will also learn from the mistakes and successes of other business owners which will help inform your business plan through the facilitated panel session.

Cerumen impaction is a common presentation to Audiologists in the audiology clinic. This masterclass will address review ear canal pathologies and the advantages and disadvantages of different cerumen management techniques.
Under supervision you will participate in various cerumen management techniques with emphasis on extraction of foreign bodies (hearing aid domes, beads, cotton tips, insects etc) and impression taking requirements.
The masterclass will also provide an opportunity to practise deep ear impression taking and will consider a range of factors when taking ear impressions including material selection, ear examination, impression taking, with final evaluation to be discussed.

Within the vestibular field, there can be a disconnect between diagnostic vestibular assessments and result interpretation for practicing audiologists. This is more evident for clinicians who are new to vestibular assessment and have limited experience.
This masterclass is designed for clinicians who have a reasonable knowledge of vestibular assessment and rehabilitation but are looking to build on this foundation. It will integrate theoretical and practical components that brings together the core elements of balance assessments, how to perform the tests and how to interpret the results through case studies.
The masterclass encourages interaction from participants who will choose the assessments they deem relevant to the case and make clinical decisions on what happens next.

This masterclass will present a basic understanding of the electrophysiological tests employed in infant diagnostic testing. Participants will gain a greater understanding of the various factors that contribute to a successful assessment. Audiologists are equipped to work with patients with hearing loss, but those in whom the complaint is of reduced or collapsed sound tolerance can be a challenge. In this workshop we will work together to explore the terminology around disorders of sound tolerance, including hyperacusis, decreased sound tolerance, misophonia, and functional audiogenic seizures. We shall reflect upon the role of the Audiologist in such situations, and the evidence base for clinical interventions will be examined. Unanswered questions for research and clinical practice will be identified.

This masterclass will present you with the anatomy and physiology underlying the VHit and SHIMP tests and describe clinical applications of both VHit and SHIMP. Participants will have hands on experience with both tests as well as case discussions.
The class will also cover tests of vestibular compensation such as the dynamic visual acuity tests and dynamic posturography including the clinical usefulness of these tests and applications. Participants will also have hands on experience with these tests with clinical case discussions.

Audiology Australia is running a mini-hack part of the AudA 2020 Conference that will provide participants with the opportunity to “learn through doing”.
Participants will work in groups to develop solutions to common audiological challenges that could help inform, inspire and share the future of adult rehabilitation. Clinicians, researchers, innovators and policy makers will work collaboratively in groups to come up with solution designs for problems facing both audiologists and their clients, and then present these to a panel of judges, with the chance to win prizes at the end of the day.
This is a collaborative, fast paced, solution-focused day to deliver real solutions that can be implemented for our profession.
